session plans as a jigsaw puzzle?
Session plans are fairly complex pieces of material created for the sake of direction, structure blueprints and a base of ideas - until it needs to be unceremoniously chucked out the window when it doesn't seem to align with the client's needs that are expressed in the session.

To me, the creation of a session plan closely resembles that of the handling of puzzle pieces. It is a process of creating a blueprint which speculates the possible directions of exploration that could come up along with notes of previous sessions and specific client details that may be essential.
The session plan is the starting point. And it can contain a permutation combination of a number of puzzle pieces that contribute to its making.
How about we check out some of the puzzle pieces in one such session plan?
- Session experientials (colloquially understood as "activities")
- Rituals of grounding and safety (Could include but not restricted to 'focus on breaths', rhythms, songs etc.)
- Object/materials (to provide an opportunity to improvise & explore based on client material)
- Feedback loop (To store & assess client's reactions to the experientials in order to incorporate changes)
...and many more pieces keep getting added into this puzzle, even during the session duration too!
The puzzle pieces may get added or modified based on the different therapeutic or theoretical orientations employed by therapists. While each session plan has the capacity to be different & complex, it is never meant to dictate the course of the session.
A session plan has its puzzle pieces scattered/rearranged in instances when it attempts to undergo changes within itself to realign with the client's material received.
